An unnamed traveler, a native of Switzerland, was on a train trip through the mountains when he suffered from the effects of the high altitude, becoming delirious and jumping from the moving train. He wandered in the cold, waded through a creek, and eventually broke into a building. He was later captured and taken to Laramie for care.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 48, No. 19 (10 May 1886), p. 303):
A Swiss, named Jacob Hirschi, while on a train near Rock Springs, Wyoming, became delirious from the effects of the altitude, and jumped from the train. He wandered about in the cold, waded through a creek, and finally broke into a building. He was captured and taken to Laramie for care.
