During the mission at the Cape of Good Hope, Elders Jesse Haven, Smith, and Walker faced intense opposition while laboring to establish the Church in Cape Town. By June 1853, their efforts had drawn both interest and hostility. On June 10, 1853, the missionaries attempted to hold a public meeting, but they were quickly interrupted and forced to disperse by a threatening mob. Despite these challenges, the missionaries continued to find individuals who were inquiring about the truth and preparing for baptism. Amidst this backdrop of persecution, the Elders recorded a significant spiritual manifestation: a local contact confided in them that they had received a divine vision concerning the future progress and ultimate success of the work. This account of the opposition and the vision is verified by the personal journals of Elders Jesse Haven and William Holmes Walker, as noted in their reports to the Church leadership.
In Their Own Words
“On the 10th of June, the brethren tried to hold another meeting, but the mob soon broke it up, threatening them. Friends were springing up, inquiring after the truth, and a few seemed ready for baptism. One person had had a vision concerning the work. — Millennial Star 15:30”
