A new member of the church in London, when experiencing spiritual difficulties, would turn to the Bible for guidance. Upon being concerned about tithing, he opened the Bible and his eyes rested on Malachi 3:8-10, providing him a direct answer regarding the necessity of paying tithes.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 60, No. 30 (28 July 1898), p. 474):
He writes regarding a new member who has recently embraced the Gospel, to the effect that whenever the latter is in spiritual difficulties he turns to his Bible when he invariably encounters a passage of scripture applicable to his case. Shortly after accepting the Gospel the brother in question was somewhat disturbed in his mind regarding the necessity of paying his just tithe to the Lord. Finally he decided to call in his arbitrator, the Bible. He took that Book in his hand and opened it. At once his eye rested on the eighth verse of the third chapter of Malachi: ‘Will a man rob God? yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings,’ he proceeded to read further: ‘Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.’
