Thomas Nelson, a former active member of a popular Protestant denomination in Belfast, Ireland, who believed he was 'saved' during a 1921 revival, became concerned about scriptural inconsistencies in his church. After searching for the 'only true Church' and finding none that met his standards, he encountered a Latter-day Saint Elder. Upon investigating the doctrines and observing the Elder's life, he recognized the gospel truth and received a testimony through the Holy Ghost.

Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):

In 1921, during a religious revival in Ireland, I considered myself to be 'saved.' I had been an active member of a church popular among Protestant denominations, and I was very zealous in my religious duties. However, I became concerned about the scriptural inconsistencies in my church. I searched for the 'only true Church,' but I could find none that met my standards. I found nothing in the Bible to lead men to believe that they were 'saved' before they had engaged in good works and endured unto the end. I held that view for some time, but one day about two years ago I met an Elder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I could see by his life that he had something that I wanted. I investigated the doctrines of the Church, and I found them to be in perfect harmony with the scriptures. And, greatest of all, God saw fit to give me a testimony by the power of the Holy Ghost to know these things for a certainty—that my Redeemer lives, that Joseph Smith was and is a prophet of God, and that they who reject his testimony do so at the peril of their future happiness.
