While performing missionary duties in South Hooper in the winter of 1881, Thomas J. Steed was approached by an elderly man who recognized him as the boy he had blessed in Farmington, Davis County, in 1852. The elder claimed the same Spirit he felt while performing the blessing in 1852 moved upon him at that moment. Steed verified the account by checking his father's journal, which confirmed that the elder had indeed performed the blessing thirty years prior.

In Their Own Words

“On the evening that we held a meeting at South Hooper, Brother Hardy and I having been blessed with much freedom—after dismissal an old gentleman, bowed down with the snows of many winters, pressed forward and grasped my hand, saying, “How do you do, Brother Steed? God bless you. You are the boy I blessed when you were a babe at Farmington.” Shaking the veteran by the hand, I replied, “How do you know that I am the boy whom you blessed, for you are a stranger to me and I am unable to recall listening to your address.” “I know I am right; you are the boy; for the same spirit that thrilled me while blessing you then came over me to-night.” I was deeply impressed with the remark, and upon returning home I made inquiry of my father, and asked him if he remembered who blessed me when I was a child. He replied that he did not remember the name, but that he had a record of it in his journal. We went to the book, and sure enough it was found to be none other than this same good brother who had told me by the Spirit, for father’s journal recorded the name of Elder Charles W. Penrose as having performed the service.”
