During the arduous journey of the Willie handcart company toward Salt Lake City, a young girl named Jane and her family faced the dire reality of starvation. Having joined the Church in England, they were among the pioneers who walked over 1,300 miles to reach the Salt Lake Valley. As their supplies dwindled to nothing, the family reached a point of desperation where they had no food left for their evening meal. In a moment of profound faith, Jane and her family knelt in prayer, pleading with Heavenly Father for sustenance. Their experience mirrored the biblical account of the feeding of the five thousand, as they sought divine intervention to survive the trek. When they later attempted to consume the few remaining hard biscuits they possessed, they found them nearly impossible to break or eat due to their extreme hardness. In a simple act of faith and resourcefulness, Jane's mother placed the biscuits into a Dutch oven and added a small amount of water. Through this process, the biscuits were softened, providing enough nourishment to sustain the family. Jane, witnessing this provision, recognized the event as a direct answer to their prayers and a manifestation of God's love, exclaiming to her mother that it was a miracle.
