Terrel Howard Bell (11 November 1921 – 22 June 1996), born at Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, served as the United States Secretary of Education under President Ronald Reagan (1981–1984). A faithful Latter-day Saint, he had earlier served as Utah's Commissioner of Higher Education and as a professor and head of educational administration at Utah State University. Known for his humility—he drove a U-Haul truck from Utah to Washington when appointed, because political appointees were not reimbursed for moving—Secretary Bell's life is a faith-promoting witness of a humble Saint who, from a one-room Idaho boyhood to the Cabinet of the United States, carried his faith and his love of learning into the highest councils of the nation.
