Suzannah Goldthorpe Heaps — The Inspired Provision of Flour in Escalante
Published August 31, 2026 at 5:40 PM
During the early, difficult years of settling Escalante, Utah (often referred to as the 'starvation' period of the late 1870s), the Heaps family faced extreme food shortages. While Thomas Heaps was away from home working to secure supplies, Suzannah and her children were left with no food. Suzannah gathered her children together and offered a fervent prayer for divine intervention. Shortly after the prayer, a neighbor or acquaintance arrived at their cabin with a sack of flour. The man explained that he had been strongly impressed by the Spirit that Suzannah and her children were in desperate need and that he must bring them food immediately. This event is cited in family records as a direct answer to prayer and a testament to Suzannah's faith.
