John Borrowman was born on May 13, 1816, and later lived in Upper Canada, settling in the Middleville area. In 1840, he encountered the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Gaining a deep spiritual conviction of the restored gospel, John made the life-altering decision to be baptized. However, his conversion came at a tremendous personal cost. His father strenuously objected to his new faith. Because John chose to remain true to his spiritual convictions and his testimony of the Latter-day Saint movement, he was disinherited and lost his rights to the family farm. Despite this profound financial and familial loss, John's faith did not waver. He left his home in Canada to gather with the body of the Saints. His dedication to his new faith was further demonstrated when he joined the Mormon Battalion, undertaking a grueling trek westward across the United States to help secure funds for the impoverished Saints and to escape religious persecution. He eventually settled in Utah as a faithful pioneer and even returned to Canada as a missionary for the Church. John Borrowman's story stands as a powerful testament of spiritual conversion and the willingness of early pioneers to sacrifice all earthly possessions, including family inheritances and relationships, for the sake of their faith and testimony. He remained a devoted member of the Church until his death on March 2, 1898.
