Robert D. Hales — Heart Attack Recovery and Spiritual Renewal

In 1998, Elder Robert D. Hales experienced his third heart attack, which required bypass surgery. During this period of severe physical trial, he testified of the spiritual healing and 'change of heart' that comes through the Savior, noting that while he suffered physical pain, he found peace and renewed spiritual strength through his faith and reliance on the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):

Since we assembled in general conference last April, as many of you know, I experienced my third heart attack, which necessitated bypass surgery. Because of skilled doctors; a caring and well-trained medical staff; my wife, Mary, who is my patient, loving, and constant caregiver; and the prayers offered by so many in my behalf, I have been blessed with renewed health and strength. Thank you for your concern and for your prayers. ... If we seek the truth, develop faith in Him, and … sincerely repent, we will receive a spiritual change of heart which only comes from our Savior. Our hearts will become new again.
