During a meeting of the School of the Prophets in Kirtland in 1833, while the brethren were engaged in prayer, Joseph Smith called their attention to Brother Reynolds Cahoon. Cahoon was on his knees with his arms extended when his hands, wrists, head, face and neck down to his shoulders became as a piece of clear, transparent amber. His blood appeared to have left his veins. Joseph Smith said that in a few more minutes, Brother Cahoon would have left them (departed from mortality), but he came to himself again. This miraculous appearance demonstrated the power of the Holy Ghost and the imminence of spiritual experiences in that sacred gathering.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
Brother Zebedee Coltrin said: I believe I am the only living man now in the church who was connected with the School of the Prophets when it was first organized. It was in the latter part of the winter of 1832-3, about the month of February or March. The school was held in a small room in the upper part of brother Whitney's store. ... In a very short time he drew our attention and said to us that Brother Reynolds Cahoon was about to leave us, and told us to look at him. He (Brother Cahoon) was on his knees and his arms were extended, his hands and wrists, head, face and neck down to his shoulders were as a piece of amber, clear and transparent, his blood having apparently left his veins. Brother Joseph said that in a few more minutes Brother Cahoon would have left us, but he came to himself again.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
After the Father had passed through, Joseph told us to again take our positions in prayer. We did so, and in a very short time he drew our attention and said to us that Brother Reynolds Cahoon was about to leave us, and told us to look at him.
