A young man in Dundee, who was recently baptized, faced potential termination from his job as a clerk at a railroad station because his overseer disapproved of his association with the Saints. The young man appealed to the superintendent, who permitted him to retain his situation and informed him that he might have had a promotion if he chose, ultimately becoming one of the young man's friends.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 42, No. 14, 5 April 1880, p. 219):

A young man in Dundee, who had been recently baptized, was employed as a clerk at a railway station. His overseer, hearing of his connection with the Saints, threatened to dismiss him. The young man, nothing daunted, went to the superintendent, and told him the circumstances. The superintendent, after hearing his story, told him he might retain his situation, and that he might have had a promotion if he chose, and he has since been one of the young man's best friends.

In Their Own Words

“A young man, who was baptized at the same time, and is a clerk in one of the railroad stations here, was served in the same manner by his overseer. But he laid his case before the superintendent, and was not only permitted to retain his situation, but informed that he might have had a promotion if he chose, and his former overseer is now one of his best friends. — Millennial Star 42:14”
