In the spring of 1852, Brigham Young instructed the Saints in Deseret to build forts to defend against enemies, predicting that war would affect the world and begin at the house of the Lord. Shortly after, Indian attacks occurred, confirming his warning.

In Their Own Words

“In the spring of 1852, President Young told the Saints in Deseret to build forts, in which they could defend themselves and property from attacking enemies, stating plainly that war would grow thick over the world and would needs begin at the house of the Lord. The Saints, shut up within the bulwarks of the mountains, and far from the bloodthirsty mobocrats who had driven them so often, seemed so secure from enemies of every kind that many were unwilling to believe the word of the Lord unto them. But when, a few short months after, the shrill war-whoop of the savage red man echoed through the valleys and kanyons of their mountain homes, and the Saints were falling under the deadly rifles of their Indian foes, they realized that God had a Prophet upon the earth, whose warning voice should not be despised nor treated lightly. — Millennial Star 21:36”
