During the high water of 1862, John Henry Smith was crossing the Provo river in a small boat with Thomas and George M. Brown when the boat capsized. He became entangled in driftwood and was held under water long enough that bystanders gave him up for dead. Suddenly, he was lifted bodily onto the bank by an unseen power. It was later learned that at that exact moment, his father, George A. Smith, had been impressed with the danger his son was in and was fervently praying for his life.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in Prophets and Apostles of the Last Dispensation, Religious Studies Center, Brigham Young University):

On a June day in 1862, apostle George A. Smith, who was in Salt Lake City, received the distinct impression that his thirteen-year-old son, John, was in grave danger. Immediately the worried father prayed to the Lord and pled with him to save the boy. At that moment, forty miles to the south, his son’s two companions, Thomas and George Brown, stood horrified on the banks of the flood-swollen Provo River, looking at a driftwood entanglement under which John Smith was trapped and drowning. All at once an unseen power lifted the boy from the waters and placed him safely on the bank.

In Their Own Words

“While l-esiding at Provo he had a miraculous escape from drowning in the Provo river during the high water of 1862. On June 8th of that year, he. together with Thomas and George M. Brown, was crossing the river on a small boat, which capsized; President Smith became entangled in some drift wood and was kept under water for some time. People who were standing on the shore had given him up for lost, when suddenly he was lifted bodily from the water onto the bank as if by an unseen power. It was afterwards learned that at that very time his father had been impressed that his son was in danger, and had prayed fervently to the Lord to save his son's life. — Millennial Star 73:44”
