In August 1845, while in Nauvoo, Illinois, a time of significant transition and mourning following the death of the Prophet Joseph Smith, President Brigham Young recorded a dream he had on a Sunday morning. While going about his business in the dream, he saw the Prophet Joseph Smith, who admonished him three times to not be in a hurry. According to Young's journal entry for August 17, 1845, the Prophet appeared and said, 'Brother Brigham dont be in a hurry.' This counsel was repeated a second and third time with increasing 'degree of sharpness.' This dream occurred during a period when the Saints were busy completing the Nauvoo Temple, spreading the gospel, and gathering believers, even as internal and external conflicts hastened plans for an eventual exodus to the West. The dream served as a lasting, cautionary message to Brigham Young, who later often reflected on the need to maintain peace and avoid the frantic pace of worldly busyness while performing the Lord's work.

In Their Own Words

“This morning I dreamed I saw brother Joseph Smith and as I was going about my business he says brother Brigham dont be in a hurry—this was repeated the second and third time, when it came with a degree of sharpness. — Brigham Young, journal entry for August 17, 1845, in Ronald K. Esplin, “Discipleship: Brigham Young and Joseph Smith””
