During the devastating San Francisco earthquake of April 18, 1906, widespread destruction leveled buildings and crippled infrastructure throughout the city. Among the structures affected was the French Hospital, where almost every room was severely damaged or wrecked by the violent tremors. Amidst the chaos and crumbling surroundings, one specific room remained completely untouched. This room was occupied by Sister E. Wolfinger, a young Latter-day Saint nurse who was on duty at the time. Despite the peril, she remained calm, continuing to perform her professional responsibilities without interruption. She successfully managed the evacuation of her patients, ensuring they were transported safely to tents in a nearby vacant lot. This account of the nurse's preserved workspace was part of a larger pattern of reported miracles among the Saints in San Francisco, where several individuals reported their rooms surviving entirely intact while everything else around them suffered damage. As research by William G. Hartley indicates, such stories of personal preservation became common among the Saints during the disaster, serving as a testament to their experiences during that harrowing event.

In Their Own Words

“Nearly every room in the French hospital was wrecked, and all were damaged, excepting the one room in which one of our young sisters was nursing, and she went calmly about her tasks, and succeeded in getting her patients out and into tents in the vacant lot where they are safe. — Millennial Star 68:20”
