Passengers from the ship Caroline, arriving in New York on June 11, 1866, were traveling toward the outfitting point for the Plains when six large cars filled with passengers ran off the track. The carriages were smashed to pieces, yet no one was killed, only four were slightly bruised, and those believed to be dead were brought out alive with no broken bones.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 28, No. 35 (1 September 1866), p. 555):
One case in point—The passengers from the ship Caroline, who landed at New York on the 11th June this present year, were traveling on their way to the outfitting point for the Plains, when six large cars, filled with passengers, ran off the track; the carriages were broken to pieces, plowing up the ground, yet, wonderful to relate! not one person was killed, only four were slightly bruised; and while at first it was supposed that over two hundred were certainly killed, men women and children were brought forth from the ruins alive, and not a bone broken. We feel to acknowledge the hand of the Lord in this, and to thank Him for His protecting care over His people.
