Orson Hyde and Heber C. Kimball wrote and sealed a letter in April 1838 predicting that Elder Thomas Webster would reject the truth and expose the mysteries of the Church unless he repented. The letter was kept sealed by witnesses until Webster was eventually cut off from the Church on October 3, 1838, for false accusations against Elders Richards, Fielding, and Whitehead, at which time the letter was opened and read, confirming the prophecy.
In Their Own Words
“In the month of April, 1838, Elder Orson Hyde and myself, being at Preston, and having some conversation with Elder Thomas Webster, who was then a member of the Church, and who we had reason to believe was not walking in the spirit of the Lord, we felt impressed to write a letter to him, which we did, and sealed it up, and gave it to Elder Clayton and Deacon Burrows, with instructions not to open it until we should tell them, or until he should be cut off from the Church, if that should ever take place. The contents of the letter were as follows: 'Brother Webster will not abide in the spirit of the Lord, but will reject the truth, and become the enemy of the people of God, and expose the mysteries which have been committed to him, that a righteous judgment may be executed upon him, unless he speedily repent.' The Sunday following, October 3, Elder Webster and the members who were with him were presented to the Church, according to the order of the Gospel, for the foregoing offence, and were cut off from the Church, after which Elder Fielding presented the foregoing letter to Elder Clayton and Deacon Burrows, who examined it and testified to the assembly that the letter had not been opened since they had marked it months before, and knew not the contents of the letter.”
