During summer bathing, the father attempted to throw his young son to an uncle in a running stream. The uncle missed the grasp, and the boy was pinned underwater by a pointed willow branch until life had nearly escaped him.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 40, No. 18 (6 May 1878), p. 284):
A little boy, the son of a brother in the Church, was playing in a stream of water, and his father, in sport, attempted to throw him to his uncle, who was standing on the opposite side. The uncle missed his hold, and the child fell into the water, and was pinned to the bottom by a sharp-pointed willow branch, which had run through his clothes. He remained there until life had nearly departed, when he was taken out, and by the power of God, through the administration of the Elders, he was restored to health.
In Their Own Words
“Another close shave was during the summer bathing, when father threw his boy to the uncle in the running stream, the grasp was missed, and a pointed willow entering the side below the ribs, kept the body beneath the water till life had near escaped. — Millennial Star 40:18”
