During the year 1897, Moses Thatcher, who had been in significant conflict with Church authorities regarding his public disagreements with leadership, underwent a high-stakes trial before the High Council of the Salt Lake Stake. Throughout the proceedings, Thatcher underwent a profound change of heart. He testified that during the course of the trial, he experienced a moment of intense spiritual enlightenment, which caused him to recognize that he had been in error and blinded by his previous contentions. He explicitly acknowledged that the Apostles were the chosen mouthpieces of the Lord and were acting under divine authority as Prophets, Seers, and Revelators. He further expressed his conviction that, in their actions toward him, the Apostles were not his adversaries but were genuinely seeking his salvation by probing the source of his spiritual ailment. Following his oral testimony before the High Council, Thatcher submitted a formal, written statement to the body, definitively accepting the council's decision without any qualification or mental reservation, a move that was subsequently documented in the proceedings published by the Deseret News.
In Their Own Words
“He admitted that he had been in error, and in the dark—that he had been seeking for light and that it had come to him through what had been developed in this trial... It was also very gratifying to hear Brother Thatcher acknowledge the Apostles as the mouthpieces of the Lord, clothed with authority as Prophets, Seers and Revelators, and acknowledge that they were seeking his salvation while probing his ailment to the very bottom. — The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star 59:38”
