Clara Brown, affectionately known as "Aunt Clara" and the "Angel of the Rockies," was a remarkable pioneer whose life was defined by profound faith, resilience, and a miraculous family reunion. Born into slavery in Virginia in 1800, Clara endured the heartbreaking separation from her husband and children when they were sold to different owners. After gaining her freedom, she traveled west during the 1859 Pikes Peak Gold Rush, becoming one of the first African American women to settle in Colorado. She established a successful laundry business in Central City and used her earnings to help others, generously supporting those in need and funding the relocation of formerly enslaved individuals to the West. Despite her success, Clara never gave up hope of finding her lost family, praying continually for their deliverance and reunion. After forty-seven years of relentless searching and separation, Clara received word that her daughter, Eliza, might be living in Iowa. With financial assistance from her friends, Clara immediately traveled to Iowa to investigate. In a deeply emotional and miraculous fulfillment of her lifelong prayers, the two women met and joyfully confirmed they were indeed mother and daughter. This improbable and deeply spiritual reunion was widely celebrated and published in newspapers across the Midwest and Colorado. Clara's enduring faith and the miraculous restoration of her family stand as a powerful testament to the power of prayer and divine providence. She returned to Colorado with Eliza, where they lived together until Clara passed away in 1885, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and unwavering faith.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in She Never Gave Up! - Margaret M. Kirk):
In 1882, after 47 years of searching seemingly everywhere and a huge letter writing campaign to officials in various locations, Clara received news that a black woman named Eliza Jane was living in Council Bluffs, Iowa. This woman was about the right age to be Clara’s daughter and she even looked a little like her. With the help and support of friends she immediately made travel arrangements and went to meet this woman to see if she was, in fact, her daughter. She was! Finally! Not only was she reunited with her long lost daughter, but she met her granddaughter, Eliza Jane’s daughter, Cindy. It was a momentous occasion. The discovery of her daughter turned her lifelong dream into reality, her time of searching was over. The newspaper in Council Bluffs published an account of this miraculous and heartwarming reunion on March 4, 1882.
