William Clayton sailed from England in September 1840 aboard the ship North America with a company of 201 Saints emigrating to America. The ship encountered severe storms with many becoming violently ill from seasickness and cholera. One family, the Holmeses from Herefordshire, gave up hope that their child would survive. However, Elder Turley called the Saints together to assess their faith, spoke powerfully concerning belief in the Lord's healing power, and asked the brethren to express their feelings. The subsequent testimony of faith apparently strengthened the company's unity and trust in God during this life-threatening voyage.
