An infant child of the wife of James Vaughan disappeared from its bed while she was in another room. Despite a search by neighbors that continued through the following night, the child could not be found. The next morning, the child was discovered by a man several miles away in a canyon. Evidence indicated the child had been carried and dragged there by a bear. Its clothing was shredded, but the child was unharmed save for a few scratches, surviving despite a heavy frost during the night.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 45, No. 39 (24 September 1883), p. 623):

An infant child of the wife of James Vaughan, of Gentile Valley, was taken from its bed while the mother was in another room. The neighbors turned out and searched all night, but could not find the child. The next morning it was found by a man several miles away in a canyon. The tracks of a large bear were seen, and the child's clothes were torn, but it was unhurt, save for a few scratches, although there was a heavy frost during the night.

In Their Own Words

“The wife of James Vaughan, of Gentile Valley, lately placed her infant upon the bed to sleep while she was busy with her housework in another room. Returning a short time afterwards, she noticed that the child was gone, and a search for it was immediately commenced, and was kept up through the following night, without avail, although all the neighbors took part in it. The next morning, about ten o’clock, the child was found by a man up a canyon several miles from its home, lying in the road asleep. In- vestigation proved, that it had been carried and dragged there by a bear. Its clothes were torn into sbreds, but, with the exception of a few scratches, the child appeared to be unhurt. It must have suffered severely from cold during the night, as there had been quite a heavy frust there. The parents had given up all hopes of finding their child alive, and when it was returned the mother was so overcome with joy that she fainted. — Millennial Star 45:39”
