A Utah Northern train carrying passengers in a coach and a sleeping car was derailed after striking a broken rail. The carriages were badly smashed, yet remarkably, none of the passengers suffered injuries beyond minor bruises.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 46, No. 44, 3 November 1884):

A Utah Northern train, consisting of a coach and a sleeping car, was thrown from the track by a broken rail, near Franklin, on the 24th ult. The cars were badly smashed, but, miraculously, none of the passengers were injured beyond a few bruises.

In Their Own Words

“One coach and one sleeping car of a Utah Northern train, both well filled with passengers, were hurled from the track recently, through striking a broken rail, and badly smashed, and yet, strange to say, none of them were injured beyond a few bruises. — Millennial Star 46:44”
