While the party, including Elders Woodruff, Richards, and others, was traveling through Salt Creek Canyon during a heavy rainstorm, their carriage broke down due to a snapping of the kingbolt. The carriage assumed an 'awkward position,' yet thanks to the horses, which reacted appropriately to the situation, none of the occupants sustained any injuries.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 40, No. 24, 17 June 1878):

While traveling through Salt Creek Canyon, in a heavy rainstorm, the kingbolt of our carriage snapped, and the carriage assumed an awkward position, but through the mercy of God, and the quietness of our horses, we were preserved from injury.

In Their Own Words

“While traveling in Salt Creek Cafion, the carriage in which brothers Woodruff, Richards and others were riding suddenly assumed a somewhat awkward position, by the breaking of the kingbolt. Fortunately, as it was remarked, the horses, which were driven and owned by brother Jenkins, of Nephi, seemed to comprehend the situation and acted accordingly, and no injury was sustained. — Millennial Star 40:24”
