Orson Pratt Brown (1853-1946) was a prominent Latter-day Saint colonizer, bishop, and mission president who played a crucial role in establishing and sustaining the Mormon colonies in northern Mexico. Known for his rugged frontier lifestyle and frequent interactions with both Mexican officials and revolutionary figures, Brown often found himself in perilous situations. On one specific occasion, he suffered a severe medical crisis that left him incapacitated and under the care of a physician named Dr. Keet. His condition was serious enough that his head was heavily bound in medical bandages, and he was confined to a chair, facing a potentially prolonged or uncertain recovery. However, drawing upon his deep Latter-day Saint faith and the power of priesthood blessings, Orson experienced a sudden and overwhelming manifestation of divine healing. In a moment of profound spiritual and physical restoration, the pain and affliction entirely left him. Defying all medical expectations and the direct observations of his doctor, Orson immediately recovered his strength. He rose up abruptly from his chair, physically tore the thick bandages from his head, and joyfully shouted to those present, 'I am healed!' The suddenness and completeness of his recovery stunned the attending physician. Dr. Keet openly acknowledged the inexplicable nature of the event, declaring that a literal miracle had been wrought on Orson's behalf. This dramatic physical healing stood as a powerful testament to Orson Pratt Brown, his family, and the surrounding Latter-day Saint community in the Mexican colonies. It reinforced their collective belief in the active power of faith, the reality of divine intervention in times of dire medical need, and God's watchful care over those laboring to build up Zion in the challenging environments of the frontier.
In Their Own Words
“On July 3, 1903 while Orson Pratt Brown and three other men were constructing an adobe building as a tithing warehouse, the scaffold on which they were standing while pulling up green cottonwood logs for rafters collapsed and the four men were thrown fourteen feet to the ground. Orson landed on his head and was struck by a heavy log. His neck, shoulder, and elbow were broken and his skull was cracked. Still conscious, he was carried into a house and administered to by two other men who also went down in the fall. A frontier doctor was sent for, arriving four days later. He set the shoulder and elbow, but feared to touch the neck. In his distress, as O. P. himself reports, “before they had taken their hands off my head, I felt life and strength come back into my body and I was healed. The power of the Lord was so great in the room that no one could speak for a long time.” Orson recovered at once, rose up from his chair, tore the bandages from his head, and shouted, “I am healed!””
