Lizzie, an aunt of the letter-writer, was suffering from blood poisoning and was given up for dead by her doctor. Following a special prayer service where she was anointed with oil, she was commanded in the name of Jesus Christ to arise, upon which she immediately sat up in bed and sang a hymn. During the prayer circle, Sister Jarrett was moved to speak in tongues, prophesying the blessings Lizzie would receive.
In Their Own Words
“I must now tell you of a wonderful manifestation of God’s holy power through His Priesthood here, in behalf of your aunt, Lizzie, who has been very sick. The doctor had done all he could with his skill, but to no purpose. Your aunt has been suffering almost night and day, and sat up with her four whole nights. At last the doctor gave her up. Blood poisoning had set in, and he said there was no hope for her—that she must die. He told Sister Foote, that they might do all the praying they had a mind to, but it would not save her. There was a special meeting last Thursday morning at the request of your Aunt Lizzie. Brother Sperry presided. We went down to the house and administered to her. I was called upon to anoint, and I never felt such a wonderful power for healing. Brother Sperry was mouth. Then I was called upon to seal the anointing. I felt the power of God upon me, and I said: 'Elizabeth, in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, and by the authority of the Holy Priesthood, I command you to arise.' She sat upright in bed, and sang a verse of the hymn 'The Spirit of God like a fire is burning,' while the rest of us wept. In my narrative. While we were up in the prayer circle, mother, S. A. Carter, Kate Paxman, A. Wheeler and Mrs. N. were washing and anointing Lizzie’s body, and Sister Jarrett was led into speaking in tongues with great power. She there told Lizzie what blessings she was about to receive through the Holy Priesthood; and she also spoke of great blessings which they had the honor and privilege of witnessing, and we were all moved to tears. — Millennial Star 60:10”
