James Lawrence, a four-year-old boy, suffered a hip injury after falling down stairs, leaving him permanently lame and confined to crutches for months. Despite consulting eminent surgeons in various cities who offered no hope, his mother Gertrude never gave up faith in the priesthood. During a stay in Ogden, the boy requested that his father, De Witt, allow him to be healed by Mormon Elders. When the Elders administered to him, James felt a tremor, was anointed, and after a second administration, he was instantly and completely healed, springing to his feet and able to walk without pain or assistance.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Young Woman's Journal, vol. 11 no. 9 (September 1900), p. 428):

James Lawrence, a little boy of four years, fell down stairs and injured his hip so severely that he was rendered a cripple, and for months had to go on crutches. His parents took him to eminent surgeons in different cities, but they could do nothing for him. His mother, Gertrude Lawrence, had great faith in the power of the Priesthood. While they were in Ogden, the little boy asked his father, De Witt Lawrence, to let the Mormon Elders heal him. The Elders were sent for, and they administered to him. James said he felt a tremor go through him. They anointed him, and after a second administration he was instantly and completely healed. He sprang to his feet and walked without any pain or assistance. This was witnessed by Leroy Ancel, Alex Waldron, and Harold Montrose.

In Their Own Words

“As the words of administration ceased, he turned, saying, ‘I will go and order a lunch served here, that we may enjoy our friends’ society a little longer.’ He left the room without looking toward James, who lay as in a stupor. Leroy followed him into the hall, and after a few words persuaded him to come back. When he saw his boy lying so helpless, with such a deathly pallor, he fell on his knees and groaned, ‘Have you killed him?’ The rest also knelt and Harold offered an earnest prayer for the power of God to be manifested in the healing of this boy according to his faith. James opened his eyes, while a tremor passed over him, and he said, faintly, ‘Anoint me again, brethren,’ and again they laid hands on his head. As they stopped praying, he raised up and exclaimed joyously: ‘Papa—papa—I am healed. Mamma—sister—uncle, see I can walk,’ and he sprang upon his feet. — The Young Woman's Journal 11:9”
