During a massive cyclone in Minnesota, a train crew on the St. Paul and Duluth road saw the storm approaching. Realizing the danger, the engineer opened the throttle at full speed, racing the storm for one mile at a speed of over a mile a minute, narrowly escaping the cyclone which struck the tracks and destroyed them immediately after the train passed.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 52, No. 29, 21 July 1890):
A cyclone recently visited Minnesota, and a train crew on the St. Paul and Duluth road had a narrow escape. Seeing the storm approaching, the engineer put on full speed, and for a mile raced the cyclone at the rate of over a mile a minute. The train escaped, but the cyclone struck the track and destroyed it immediately after the train had passed.
In Their Own Words
“The train gave orders that the train should start immediately at full speed. The engine driver threw open the throttle, and the passengers clung to the windows and some of them to the platform, but the train moved into the cars, and the engineer shut down the people to their seats. The train raced for a mile at a speed of over a mile a minute, just escaping the storm which struck the track and smashed it into splinters in less than a moment after the train had passed. — Millennial Star 52:29”
