In 1840, during Wilford Woodruff's mission in Herefordshire, England, Mary Pitt had been lame and unable to walk for eleven years, reportedly confined to a chair. She was the sister of William Pitt. At Dymock, she was carried into the water and baptized by Wilford Woodruff. On the evening of May 18, 1840, at Brother Kingston's house, Brigham Young, Willard Richards, and Wilford Woodruff laid hands upon her head and confirmed her a member of the Church. Brigham Young, acting as voice, rebuked her lameness and commanded her in the name of the Lord to arise and walk. Mary Pitt was healed, rose from her chair, and walked. She reportedly never afterward used a staff or crutch; the following day she walked through Dymock, creating a stir among the people. Wilford Woodruff later recorded that Mary Pitt, who eventually joined the Church, emigrated to Nauvoo, Illinois, and died there, had not walked for eleven years but was healed and walked after the administration. The healing was part of a season of reported miracles in Herefordshire.

In Their Own Words

“The sick were healed, devils were cast out, and the lame were made to walk. One case I will mention: Mary Pitt, who died in Nauvoo, sister of Wm. Pitt, who died in Salt Lake City, had not walked upon her feet for eleven years. We carried her into the water and I baptized her. On the evening of the 18th of May, 1840, at Brother Kingston's house in Dymock, Elders Brigham Young, Willard Richards and I laid hands upon her head and confirmed her. Brigham Young, being mouth, rebuked her lameness, and commanded her to arise and walk, in the name of the Lord. The lameness then left her, and she never afterwards used a staff or crutch. She walked through the town of Dymock next day, which created a stir among the people.”
