After arriving in the Salt Lake Valley, a tithing clerk attempted to dissuade Mary Fielding Smith from paying tithing, reasoning that as a poor widow she should not bear such a burden. Mary firmly rebuked him, testifying that she needed the blessings that come from faithful obedience to the law of tithing. This account exemplifies her unwavering faith and demonstrates divine principle that the Lord blesses those who faithfully keep His commandments regardless of their circumstances.
