Mary B. Crandal, feeling inadequate and fearful about presiding over a meeting in a large pavilion in Spanish Fork, sought divine guidance. She opened her copy of The Young Woman's Journal and read: 'Do not underrate yourself; be humble and make an effort to do what you are called upon to do, and you will accomplish it.' She accepted these words as inspiration, and her fear disappeared.
In Their Own Words
“The Young Woman's Journal was lying on the table, and I thought I would see what I could find to ease my troubled mind. Here's what I cast my eyes on: 'Do not underrate yourself; be humble and make an effort to do what you are called upon to do, and you will accomplish it.' Now, don't you think I thought those were words of inspiration to me? I never even looked who had written them, nor could I tell which Journal they are in, but they are engraven on my mind so that I will not try to throw on to another what I am called upon to do, with the help of the Lord; for without His help no one can do very much. We went, and my voice never failed me once, and all fear left me, but O, I was very humble. — The Young Woman's Journal 7:6”
