Lu‘isa Palauni Kongaika and her husband Viliami served a proselyting mission in Tonga in 1946. Viliami was sweet-natured and lighthearted; Lu‘isa described herself at that time as headstrong and argumentative, with a habit of scolding and an angry tongue that had become a burden both to her husband and to their missionary labors. During that mission she had a dream that changed her life. In it, Tongan mission president Emile C. Dunn came to her and invited her to accompany him and his family to a special conference where the Lord himself would be present. When they arrived she beheld a high, massive stone shaped like a door, and it was made known to her that Jesus Christ was behind it, waiting to interview each one personally. She walked happily and confidently forward for her interview — but the Savior looked sternly at her and told her that with all her other fine qualities, her constant nagging and ridicule were a disgrace, and turned her from his presence. She howled and pleaded until her sobs woke her. She immediately begged her husband's pardon — she had been, as she said, a bully who had taken advantage of his sweet disposition. "From that moment until this very day," she testified decades later, "I have been a changed person with regard to my husband, feeling much love for him and being positive and supportive."

In Their Own Words

“The Savior looked sternly at me and said, "O woman with the evil mouth, I don't want to see you. You speak such ugly words to your husband... Leave my presence."... From that moment until this very day, I have been a changed person with regard to my husband, feeling much love for him and being positive and supportive. — Lu‘isa Palauni Kongaika, quoted in Eric B. Shumway, "Tonga: A Heritage of Faith," Ensign, August 1995”
