A young girl who was habitually patient and peevish would become angry or slap others when displeased. Her father spoke to her about her behavior and encouraged her to seek the Lord for help. She began praying for assistance, which resulted in a character change and the successful overcoming of her irritable nature.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 52, No. 13, 31 March 1890, p. 208):
A little girl, who is one of a family of several children, had a temper which made her disagreeable. She was not a bad child, but she was irritable, impatient, and peevish; and when anything occurred to displease her, she would become angry, and sometimes even slap those who were near her. Her father, who was a man of wisdom, saw this, and he spoke to her about it. He told her that she was doing wrong, and that she was making herself and those around her unhappy. He told her that she could not overcome this temper by her own strength alone, but that if she would pray to the Lord, He would help her. The little girl followed her father's words; she took his advice and prayed to the Lord for help. The change in her character was soon perceived. She gradually overcame her faults, and now she is as patient and kind as she was formerly irritable and peevish. She knows that by the help of the Lord she has been able to conquer her irritable nature, and she has proved for herself that He is a God Who hears and answers prayer.
