The dedication of the Kirtland Temple on March 27, 1836, marked a transformative period of spiritual endowment. Witnesses described it as a Pentecostal event, with Benjamin Brown testifying that the manifestations were 'even greater than at the day of Pente[cost].' The atmosphere was filled with a sense of divine presence; many reported the house being filled with a glory like a mighty rushing wind. Spiritual gifts were poured out abundantly, with dozens speaking in tongues simultaneously and prophesying. Miraculous visions occurred throughout the assembly: some saw cloven tongues of fire resting upon the brethren, and an observer witnessed an angelic hand placed upon a man as he spoke in tongues to the Lamanites. Others beheld the heavens opened, the Savior, and angels stationed at the four corners of the temple with drawn swords or standing thick on the ridge, including chariot-riding figures and historical personages like Peter, John, and James. A cloud of golden light, described by some as bright as the sun on gold, rested upon the building. Witnesses also reported seeing three personages hovering in the room holding bright keys and a chain, and visions of the ten tribes returning in chariots. The dedication proceedings included the miraculous behavior of an infant who remained silent for hours until the Hosanna shout, when the child reportedly joined in. Beyond the formal dedication, ongoing meetings involved healings, such as a young man whose sprained ankle was healed and a boy with a broken arm who regained use of his limb immediately after the laying on of hands. Eliza R. Snow remarked that no mortal language could adequately describe these heavenly manifestations.

Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):

Sunday Evening after Joseph spoke opened & told them the day of Penticost was continued the Brethren began to prophesy many prophesied in the name of the Lord then began speaking in tongues and it filled as it were the whole house, perhaps there were forty speaking at once Cloven tongues of fire was seen to sit on many of them an hand was seen laid upon one when he spake in tongues to the lamanites many Visions seen, one saw a pillow or cloud rest down upon the house bright as when the sun shines on a cloud like as gold, two others saw three personages hovering in the room with bright keys in their hands, and also a bright chain in their hands.
