During the translation of the New Testament, while the Colesville Branch was preparing to move to Missouri, Orson Pratt recalls seeing the Prophet Joseph Smith change in appearance to look exceedingly white and shining, as if the sun were shining through him.

Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):

I was present when this revelation was given. No great noise or physical manifestation was seen; Joseph was as calm as the morning sun. There was a noticed change in his countenance that I had never seen before; he was exceedingly white, and seemed to shine. At times when he was translating the New Testament, I wondered why he did not use the Urim and Thummim in translating the Book of Mormon. While this thought passed through my mind, I felt the Spirit of the Lord, and it was revealed to me that he had advanced so far that he understood the operations of that Spirit, and did not need the assistance of that instrument.

In Their Own Words

“Pratt said he was present when this revelation was given. No great noise or physical manifestation was seen; Joseph was as calm as the morning sun. There was a noticed change in his countenance that he had never seen before; he was exceedingly white, and seemed to shine. At times when he was translating the New Testament, and wondered why he did not use the Urim and Thummim in translating the Book of Mormon. While this thought passed through his mind, he felt the Spirit of the Lord, and it was revealed to him that he had advanced so far that he understood the operations of that Spirit, and did not need the assistance of that instrument. — Millennial Star 36:32”
