John Peterson, a resident of Mount Pleasant, Utah, recounts that in 1857 in Sweden, he suffered severely from consumption. He was so ill he could not take food for five weeks and lost his speech. On the third day, he appeared to die; his pulse stopped, though a slight pulsation remained in his head. During that night, an angel appeared, touched his head, and guided his spirit on a journey to a gathering of his forefathers. He witnessed a meeting where the Apostle Matthias and a young apostle (later identified as Parley P. Pratt) were teaching the dead about the Gospel and temple work. The elder apostle told Peterson it was his lot to redeem his forefathers and offered to grow him new lungs if he would return. Peterson agreed, and upon his return to his body, he felt his lungs expand and his blood circulate. He awoke to find it was 4:00 a.m., roughly five to six hours after he had been counted dead. He made a full recovery and lived for many years afterward.

In Their Own Words

“I was born in Sweden, in the year 1837. In the year 1857, I was living in the city of Malmo, and was suffering from consumption. I had been sick for a long time, and for five weeks I had not been able to take any food, and had lost my speech. On the third day of my illness, I appeared to die. My pulse stopped, although there was a slight pulsation in my head. My father and mother were in the room, and my father was reading the Bible. It was between ten and eleven o'clock that a visitor suddenly made his appearance in the room, and standing by the couch on which I lay, placed his hand on my head and asked if I was ready to go? I answered, "Yes;" and just at that instant I seemed to stand upon the floor, my body lying on the bed. I looked around to see if my father could see us, but he seemed to have been too interested in reading to have noticed us. We started off on our journey through space, seemingly with the rapidity of lightning (for I can make no other comparison). I asked my guide who he was. He answered he was one of the guardian angels sent to bring the dead. We traveled until we came to a large gathering of people. I saw many of my forefathers there. I saw a man standing in the midst of the people, and I was told it was Matthias, one of the Apostles of Jesus Christ. Beside him stood a young man, whom I was told was Parley P. Pratt. They were teaching the people the Gospel and the necessity of temple work. The elder Apostle turned to me and said, "It is your lot to redeem your forefathers." I answered, "Yes, but my lungs are gone." He replied, "It is easy to grow new lungs in a man; if you will go, your guide will attend to this." I answered, "I will go." My guide touched my hands, the spirit entered the body at that instant, the blood commenced to circulate warmly through my veins, and in a few minutes I felt my lungs expanding. I awoke and found it was four o'clock in the morning. I had been dead, as far as the world could see, for five or six hours. I recovered my health and have lived to see the day when I could perform the work for my dead.”
