While attending church in Gefle, Sweden, John E. Forsgren's sister experienced a vision. In one recollection she is named Ericka Forsgren; another identifies her as Christina Erika Forsgren or Erika. She saw a personage who told her that on July 5 a man would arrive with three books and that those who believed in them would be saved. The account identifying her as Erika adds that she had prayed for enlightenment because she was dissatisfied with her Lutheran minister's preaching; during the service she became numb and unable to move, and saw the personage holding the books. When John arrived carrying the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and the Doctrine and Covenants, she recognized the fulfillment of the vision and accepted his message. Peter A. Forsgren's account further relates that John found him suffering from consumption, which local physicians had declared incurable; after gospel ordinances, including anointing with oil and prayer, Peter was healed and baptized on July 26, 1850, a date recognized in Forsgren family archives as the first baptism in the Scandinavian Mission. Ericka was subsequently baptized on August [the supplied account is truncated before giving the full date].

In Their Own Words

“It has often been the case that messengers of the Gospel have found the way prepared before them by the Lord, through visions, or dreams, and Elder Forsgren had a similar experience. On his arrival in Gefle he learned that his sister some time previous had had a remarkable vision which had made a deep impression upon her. She was sitting in church one Sunday morning, having previously engaged in devotional exercises. As the hymn was sung she saw clearly a personage standing before her, who said: “On the 5th of July a man will come to you with three books, and all those that believe in the things written in the books shall be saved.” When Elder Forsgren arrived with the Bible, the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants, she believed his testimony. — Millennial Star 62:37”
