During a crucial season of ministry and travel, Joel Hills Johnson's family and company "were taken sick with the chills and fever, until they were all sick but myself." This miraculous preservation of Joel's health while all around him fell ill—including his own wife—stands as a testimony to God's protection and the power of faith during a time of great need.

As his family and companions struggled with severe fever and chills, Joel remained in robust health, enabling him to care for the sick and continue his ministerial duties. His wife lingered for some time in illness, yet Joel was sustained by divine power to minister to her and others.

This preservation is particularly remarkable given the context of the era: malarial fever and chills were common killers on the frontier, and entire families and companies were frequently decimated by such illnesses. That Joel alone was spared while surrounded by the sick suggests a specific divine purpose and blessing upon his life.

Joel's account, preserved in his autobiography and journal, records this experience as part of his testimony of God's watchful care over His servants and people.
