In 1878, Jesse Nathaniel Smith received a sudden and inspired call from President John Taylor to leave his established home in Parowan, Utah, to lead the colonization efforts in Eastern Arizona. Although he was well-established in Parowan, Smith recognized the call as inspired guidance from the Holy Ghost. He relocated his family to the Arizona Territory, where he served as the president of the Eastern Arizona Stake and played a pivotal role in the settlement of Snowflake, viewing the success of the colony as a result of divine direction and remarkable providence.
