Jamie, an orphan boy in Edinburgh living with an unkind uncle, was destitute and mocked by peers for his tattered clothing. Following his sister's advice to pray to his 'Father in heaven' for what he needed, he prayed for a coat, vest, and jacket. Shortly after, a lady at a house where he delivered shoes gave him two full suits of clothing belonging to boarders. Later, while walking, he felt a divine voice confirm his belief in a Father in heaven. Subsequently, hearing Elders Robert Hogg and John Anderson preach in Shakespeare Square led to his conversion. Later, experiencing a moment of temptation to join coworkers in a beer shop, he felt a distinct internal impulse telling him the Gospel was true and to leave, which he did to seek baptism.

In Their Own Words

“Jamie went home and before he lay down to sleep he knelt down and prayed. He was not used to praying, so he did it in a plain way. This is almost exactly what he said: 'Faither in heaven, if ye are my Faither in heaven I want ye tae show that ye are. I want ye tae get me a coat, (vest) and a jacket.' He tumbled into bed and the next morning he attended to his duties. For several days he did not think much about praying, until he was sent with a package of shoes to a house at which two boys from the East Indies were boarding. They had been sent from India by their father, to be educated in Edinburgh. The lady who came to the door when he rang the bell took the package and looked at Jamie with her kind, motherly eyes. He glanced up at her face, and his heart went out to her. 'Will you come in and have some oat cake?' 'Thank you, I believe I will.' Jamie was tendered a seat and given a piece of cake, and she went about hunting around for articles of clothing. She gathered together two full suits that were quite good and which the rich man’s boys had cast aside. She made a parcel of them, held it out to Jamie and said, 'I would like you to take that.' It was received with thankfulness by him and he started for home. On the way a voice seemed to say to him, 'Now, haven't you a Father in heaven?' 'Yes, I believe I have,' said Jamie, and he felt it was due to that he had got even more than he asked for in his two suits in answer to prayer from his heavenly Father. — Millennial Star 59:39”
