Elder J. A. Quist, while serving as a missionary in Sweden, fell ill in Wingaker, suffering from severe abdominal pain. On March 12, 1890, he asked Elder J. A. Beckstrand if he could hear singing, and upon receiving a negative answer, he stated he heard angels singing and their music was sweet. He passed away on March 13th.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 52, No. 14 (7 April 1890), p. 222):

Elder J. A. Quist, of the Scandinavian mission, died at Wingaker, Sweden, on the 13th of March, 1890. He had been suffering from severe abdominal pains for some time. On the 12th of March he asked Elder J. A. Beckstrand, who was attending him, if he could hear the singing. Elder Beckstrand replied that he could not. Brother Quist then said he could hear the angels singing, and that their music was very sweet.

In Their Own Words

“About an hour and a half before his death, he asked Elder Beckstrand if he could hear any singing, and, when this was answered in the negative, said: ‘I hear the angels singing; their music is so sweet.’ — Millennial Star 52:14”
