Upon arriving in Preston, England, in 1837, Heber C. Kimball, Orson Hyde, and Willard Richards, having no money, sought lodging and were led to a room belonging to a widow in Wilford-street. Shortly after, they were visited by the Reverend Fielding's sister who brought them half a crown, which they interpreted as a divine provision.
In Their Own Words
“Brother Goodson having found a room where we could be accommodated, which belonged to a widow woman, situated in Wilford-street, we moved our baggage there. Shortly after, brother Fielding returned, having found his brother, who requested to have an interview with some of us that evening. Accordingly Elders Hyde, Goodson, and myself went, and were kindly received by him and Mr. Watson, his brother-in-law, who was present at the time. We gave them a short account of the object of our mission, and the great work which the Lord had commenced, and conversed on those subjects until a late hour. The next morning we were presented with half a crown, which Mr. Fielding’s sister had sent us. This was the first money we had received since we left our homes, and it truly was a manifestation of the kindness of our Heavenly Father, and a proof that He would provide for us while we were engaged in His service. We felt to thank Him for this, as well as for all other blessings He had bestowed upon us, and we felt encouraged to go forward in the work, knowing that He who had provided for us thus far, would continue to do so.”
— Heber C. Kimball, as quoted in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 38, No. 35
