Heber C. Kimball and Orson Hyde prophesied to Parley P. Pratt that his wife, who had been barren for six years, would be healed and bear a son named Parley, who would inherit the priesthood. They also prophesied that Parley would go on a mission to Toronto, Canada, where he would find a people prepared for the Gospel, and that this mission would spread the Gospel into England. Parley P. Pratt, Jr. was born on March 25, 1837, and the mission to Toronto resulted in the conversion of John Taylor and others, which opened the door for the mission to Great Britain.

In his own later written history, Parley P. Pratt clarifies that the Canadian mission of 1836, which resulted in the conversion of John Taylor and Joseph Fielding, lasted through the season, and he returned to Kirtland in October of that year. He further notes that following the death of his first wife, Thankful, on the day of their son's birth, he returned to Canada in the spring of 1837 on a short mission where he selected the Canadian elders Joseph Fielding, Isaac Russell, John Snyder, and John Goodson to be set apart for the first mission to England under the presidency of Heber C. Kimball and Orson Hyde.

In Their Own Words

“On the 25th of March 1837, my son Parley was born, in fulfillment of a prophecy delivered on the head of my wife, about eleven months previous, by Elder H. [Heber] C. Kimball. Having lived to see and embrace her child, she died about two hours after his birth. In the spring of 1837, soon after the death of my wife, I returned to Canada on a short mission to the Saints, during which several of the Canadian elders viz., Joseph Fielding, Isaac Russell, John Snyder and John Goodson, were selected for a mission to England. — Parley P. Pratt, Autobiography, 1888 edition”
