A young boy in Quorn became very ill in July 1897 with a sickness that caused him to lose his eyesight, with doctors warning he would become entirely blind. After the boy's parents, who were poor, were advised by local men to take him to a hospital, they instead brought the boy to the LDS office at the request of the mother, who was a member of the Church. The missionaries administered to him, and he began to improve immediately. By September 1, 1897, the boy was well enough to start school, and his teacher and others were astonished by his rapid recovery, which the parents attributed to the power of the Lord. The father subsequently joined the Church.
In Their Own Words
“A young boy of Quorn, in the month of July last was very ill, owing to some sickness which affected his eyes, so that his parents expressed their belief that if something was not done he would become entirely blind. On account of the parents being poor, some of the leading men in that district said they would take him to the hospital and have him attended to. The parents took the boy to town, went to a doctor and had his eyes examined. The doctor said that the boy would have to be taken to the hospital at once, as he was in a critical condition. The mother, being a member of our Church desired to consult with us, so she drove the boy with her up to our office, and we asked her if she had faith that we as servants of the Lord could administer to him at their request. They said they believed more in the promises of the Lord than upon the promises of men. We administered to the boy, and from that moment he began to get better. On the 15th of August he was almost entirely well, and he and his sister twelve years old requested baptism. On the 1st of September we drove out and visited them. The boy had then started to school and has continued ever since. His teacher and all who saw him asked the parents what remedy they had used; he had got well so soon that they were astonished at him. We told them that it was by the power of the Lord. The father has since been baptized, and they all feel very thankful to the healing power which was made manifest before their eyes. We feel also thankful to the Lord for the renewed testimony which we received by this circumstance. — Millennial Star 59:44”
