A shipyard worker sustained a severe head wound from a falling hammer, causing persistent pain that medicine failed to relieve. After being taught the ordinance of the laying on of hands by Elders Charles Brewerton and Ralph Harker, he was administered to and subsequently recovered.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
While laboring in the Newcastle conference, Elder Ralph Harker and I were called to visit a gentleman who was employed in one of the shipyards. He had been struck on the head by a falling hammer, and for some time had been suffering from the effects of the injury. He had been under the care of a physician, but had received no relief. The evening we called we found the gentleman suffering great pain. We explained to him the ordinance of the anointing with holy oil and the laying on of hands, accompanied by the prayer of faith, for the healing of the sick. He seemed interested, and said he believed what we told him, and that he thought we were true servants of God. We administered to him, and he enjoyed a good night's rest. He began to recover, and now he is almost himself again. He and his wife are investigating the Gospel, and we hope to see them both in the Church before long.
