On August 5, 1885, in Brigham City, Box Elder County, Mrs. Holst and her daughter were sitting in their kitchen during a storm when lightning struck the house. The bolt splintered the wood, tore through the wall, and entered the kitchen. It struck the 15-year-old daughter, leaving her unconscious and severely blistered, and benumbed Mrs. Holst. After the bolt exited the room, both women survived and began to recover.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 47, No. 35 (31 August 1885), p. 558):
On the 5th of August, Mrs. Holst and her daughter, of Brigham City, were sitting in their kitchen during a storm, when the lightning struck the house, splintered the wood, tore through the wall, and entered the room. It struck the daughter, a girl of 15, leaving her unconscious and severely blistered, and benumbed the mother. The fluid passed out of the room, and both are recovering.
In Their Own Words
“On the evening of Wednesday, August 5th, at Brigham City, Box Elder County, as Mrs. Holst and her daughter, the latter about 15 years of age, were sitting in their kitchen, a flash of lightning struck the south side of the house, splintered the weather boarding, passed through the wall, tearing off considerable plaster from the inside, and entered the kitchen where they were sitting. The fluid struck the young lady, passing over most of the surface of her body, knocking her almost insensible, and blistering her severely on several parts of her person. Mrs. Holst was also benumbed and almost prostrated. The electric current then tore a strip from the clock shelf, traveled over the face of a large picture, breaking pieces from the frame, then made its exit, leaving the inmates of the house more dead than alive. Mrs. Holst has about recovered, and the young lady is gradually recovering from the shock and injuries received from her terrible visitor.— Millennial Star 47:35”
