During the 1886 voyage of the steamship British King from Liverpool to Philadelphia, the company of Latter-day Saints encountered a heavy gale on October 15, the day after leaving Queenstown. On Saturday, October 16, 1886, a sister named Karen Peterson suffered a fractured arm when the rough seas caused a ship's door to slam against her with such force that one of her bones was broken. As reported by Elders Joshua Greenwood, Edward Hansen, and William Rex, she received the best medical attention available on the ship and progressed favorably. Throughout the voyage, the Elders were diligent in attending to the needs of the Saints, and the company observed a strict schedule of morning and evening prayers. Despite the trials of the voyage—including the death of a young child due to convulsions caused by seasickness and the challenges of foggy weather—the Saints held regular meetings, and the Elders noted that as the winds abated, the health and spirits of the passengers improved in answer to their petitions. The company arrived safely at the wharf in Philadelphia at 9 a.m. on October 27, 1886.
In Their Own Words
“On Saturday, the 16th, Sister Karen Peterson had the misfortune to break her arm. The sea was very rough, and a wave struck the door, slamming it with such force against her arm that one of the bones was fractured. She received the best attention, and is progressing favorably. — Letter of Joshua Greenwood, October 25, 1886, in Saints by Sea”
