On September 14, 1837, in Bedford, England, Willard Richards observed a day of personal fasting and reported feeling significantly strengthened and refreshed by the Spirit. In his journal, he records that at noon he administered to Jane Braddock by the laying on of hands, and by that same evening, she had recovered and was well. Later that day, he also laid hands on Sister Lavender and Sister Brown for their health. Following these administrations, he preached a sermon at the home of Brother Smith.
