Grandmother Middleton, as a teenager in Scotland, faced intense pressure from her family to abandon her newly adopted 'Mormon' faith. In a moment of extreme spiritual struggle and prayer, she knelt and saw the room become illumined with a glorious flood of light, which brought her peace and confirmation.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Young Woman's Journal, vol. 28 no. 3 (March 1917), page 167):
She has told us many times that in the hour of her greatest need she called upon the Lord to direct her; praying in all humility and faith for His guidance. Suddenly the room in which she knelt seemed illumined, for a moment, with a glorious flood of light. Then her heart was satisfied. She knew that the Lord had heard her prayer, and that He would guide her in the way of truth. She had no more doubts, no more fears, but went forward with a firm determination to serve the Lord, and to keep His commandments, no matter what the cost might be.
In Their Own Words
“She has told us many times that in the hour of her greatest need she called upon the Lord to direct her; praying in all humility and faith for His guidance. Suddenly the room in which she knelt seemed illumined, for a moment, with a glorious flood of light. Then her heart was satisfied. — The Young Woman's Journal 28:3”
